Mission and Core Focus
The Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association (ACCSA) is dedicated to serving students through advocacy, support, and community engagement. Its mission is to ensure that student voices are represented within the college and to create a vibrant student community. ACCSA’s leadership structure reflects this mission, with elected student leaders guiding its direction, ensuring that the association’s activities align with the needs and interests of the student body.
#2
Organizational Structure and Key Functions
ACCSA’s structure is centered on a council of elected student leaders, who guide the association’s strategy. Amanda Hamm, the Executive Director, leads a staff team that implements the council’s plans and provides support for various student services. The
association administers health and dental benefits, organizes peer support programs, facilitates student-led clubs, and provides transportation services such as bus passes for students in Brandon and discounted passes for those in Winnipeg. Additionally, ACCSA
organizes intramural sports and advocates for students in disciplinary processes.
#3
Inclusivity and Representation
Inclusivity is a core focus for ACCSA. The association’s council structure includes roles dedicated to diversity and inclusion, such as the Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion and representatives for specific student groups, including 2STLGBTQ, international
students, and mature students. This approach ensures that the student council reflects the diverse backgrounds and needs of the college’s student population.
To promote inclusivity, ACCSA organizes events that foster community engagement. The revival of the “Sun of a Beach” beach volleyball tournament, which brings together students, staff, alumni, and the broader community, exemplifies this commitment. This event, which had been a tradition for many years, was successfully relaunched, demonstrating ACCSA’s dedication to maintaining a lively campus atmosphere.
#4
Leadership and Collaboration
Amanda Hamm’s leadership style is centered on community development and relationship-building. She focuses on connecting with students and creating partnerships within the college. Amanda’s approach involves collaborating with the student council and college administration to ensure that ACCSA’s initiatives are in line with student needs. Her responsibilities include recruiting and training new council members, attending council meetings, and managing the day-to-day operations of a team of eight staff members.
#5
Challenges and Future Outlook
ACCSA faces challenges in recruiting new student leaders, as students are often adjusting to college life and may find it difficult to commit to leadership roles early in the academic year. Amanda Hamm addresses this challenge by emphasizing the benefits of involvement, such as networking opportunities, resume-building experiences, and honoraria for council members.
Despite these challenges, ACCSA remains committed to its mission of serving students and fostering a vibrant campus community. By focusing on inclusivity, community engagement, and student representation, ACCSA continues to play a crucial role in enhancing the student experience at Assiniboine Community College.
